King Of Leogrance was scratched.

Sadly, tragedy struck as Anthony Van Dyck had to drop from the race and was euthanized with a fractured fetlock. May this poor, brave race horse rest in peace.

Even with corona virus, the cup still ran, albeit with an empty stadium. People across Australia were glued to their screens and ready to see the track torn up, and despite the festival culture of years past being absent, the buzz around this event was anything but low, it was just as hyped up as it is every year! Fans of the sport event aren’t letting this one die any time soon, pandemic be damned.

When we think of this event and all the excitement that surrounds it, we think of the music from our partner Blue Pie’s artist The Eastside Boyz! Why hip hop for something like the Melbourne cup? Because the Eastside Boyz also did some intense pump up songs for sporting events too, most notably GETTEM for the Atlanta Falcons!

Yeah, different sports, different countries, different everything, and perhaps not the musical style you’d expect out of the Melbourne Cup. But is it hyping you and getting your blood pumped, like it’s clearly written to? If your answer was yes, then that sums it up. The same can be said for PULL UP ft MC Breed!

Or if you’re not in a celebrating mood and want to mourn Anthony Van Dyck with us, Pete Hawkes’ music is the best fit we can think of – a tribute to the fallen racer, as much as we can. If you’re interested, then sit back, relax, and prepare to be transported. Pete Hawkes has a true level of skill with all string instruments, and that can best be heard in one of his greatest albums, Return to the Highlands.

The echoing strum of those guitars feels like the sound is carrying itself across a lonely, misty moor. The distant strings and sorrowful notes in the background create a sense of true atmosphere that is hard to match, and really showcases the sheer class of the editing employed in these tracks.

However you choose to commemorate the Melbourne Cup 2020, all of us at Gravity Stars and Blue Pie hope that the music we’ve chosen to recommend is right for you, and that you had a good time at the races, as much as the pandemic allowed.
